Old Illtydians RFC vs. Tylorstown RFC Match Report (sat 24th Sep 2022)

Tylorstown returned to league action after success in the previous weekends win at Rhymney RFC in the cup.

The game was played in excellent conditions suited to attacking rugby. It was Old Illtydians who started the game on the front foot and after a series of probing runs Tylorstown committed an infringement at a ruck which resulted in 3 points for the home team.

For the remainder of the half Tylorstown totally dominated proceedings with the scrum putting the home under immense pressure and outside half Aaron Clement controlling the play.

Tylorstown's first try came through the forwards when the referee finally had enough of the home teams infringements at the scrum and he awarded a penalty try.

Next try came after good defensive work turned the ball over for the Tylorstown backs to combine well to put Jordan Williams over for a try that he converted.

Flanker Jake Jones was next to cross the try line after good interplay between forwards and backs Jake crashed over way out. The conversion sailed inches wide and the referee called an end to the first half. 19-3 to Tylorstown.

Tylorstown were so far on top at half time that discussions turned to a return to the social club around the corner but what happened in the second half was a massive turn around.

Old Illtydians started the second half well and scored two penalties in quick succession from Tylorstown indiscipline. Tylorstown continued to give away penalties and the very impressive Old Illts outside half continued to take advantage of our poor discipline kicking another 3 penalties. He also scored a superb individual try which he converted where he regathered his own high kick to run in uncontested from the half way line. That took the home team into a 26-19 lead scoring 23 unanswered points.

This seemed to kick a bit of life back into Tylorstown and we started playing like we did in the first half with a series of attacks that were stopped just short of the line . After a series of scrums back row forward Marcus Thomas crashed over under the posts . Scoring the try must have come as a relief to the referee as he couldn't have been far away from having to give another penalty try. With the pressure on Jordan Williams converted with the last kick off the game. Although disappointed with the final result. The game was an enjoyable watch which was well refereed and played in an excellent spirit.
