Tylorstown v Trimsaran Match Report

Tylorstown 30 Trimsaran 17

Tylorstown welcomed west Wales team Trimsaran  for their first visit to Penrhys Park, in the third round of the Swelec Bowl competition. Trimsaran unbeaten this season, before their visit, meant that this would be a difficult encounter for the Tigers, with the home team only pulling away mid-way through the second half.

From the kick, off flanker Liam Derrick caught the ball and made a great run, crashing through several tackles before being finally brought down. During the early stages of the game the home team struggled to find their form and as a result quickly found themselves 6-0 down, after the away team kicked two early penalties. Finally, the valley side awoke from their slow start when the ball was swiftly moved wide, on the away team’s ten metre line, a lovely well-timed pass by centre Jordan Williams put young wing Owen Jenkins over in the corner for the home team’s opening points of the game, the difficult conversion out wide being missed, bringing the score to 5-6 to the visitors. Again, the visitors took control of the game and only great tackling by the centre paring of Williams, and Sam Davies and flanker Jake Jones nullified a number of dangerous attacks. It was from one of these attacks that centre Williams managed to secure the ball in his own 22, with great strength and speed he was finally brought down 10 metres from the Trimsaran line, the ball was quickly recycled and moved out wide, however with a 3 man overlap and a try beckoning, one of the Trimsaran players was slow running back, the ball hit him and stopped a certain try from being scored. The away team could count themselves lucky that only a yellow card was awarded for the infringement and not a penalty try as well. Scrum half Dylan Lewis kicking the penalty, 8-6 to the home team.

With Trimsaran a man down it was Tylorstown’s chance to take control of the game, however it was the away team who raised their game and the home team soon found themselves 14-8 down when the away team kicked a penalty and also scored an unconverted try. The valleys outfit finally managed to take the lead late on in the first half when centre Williams showed great strength and determination to score under the posts, scrumhalf Lewis adding the extra points to make the half time score 15-14 to the home side.

The second half saw the welcome inclusion of club captain Chris Lloyd and centre Scott Thomas. The scrums were being dominated by the home pack with the front row trio of Aiden o’Donaghue, Chris Lloyd and Ashley Thomas having the better of their west Walian counterparts. Young outside half Nathan Williams showed some great skill when catching a low pass and always looked dangerous in attack and solid in defence. Tylorstown increased their lead when scrum half Dylan Lewis broke from the base of a scrum, on the opposition 22-meter line and showed both speed and strength to force his way over the line for the home team’s third try of the day, making the score 20-14. Again, the deficit was cut when the visitors were awarded a penalty, bringing the scores to 20-17. The home team’s forth try of the day came as a result of great work by the forwards with second rows Lukke Rees and Mathew Paul making inroads into the Trimsaran defence, this in turn laid the platform for the backs to move the ball out wide, a beautifully delayed pass by Jenkins put centre Williams over for his second try of the day which was converted by Lewis, making the score 27-17. Shortly after the restart outside half Williams then made a fantastic break which eventually led to a penalty which Lewis converted to make the score 30-17. Then in quick succession the home team received two yellow cards, with the 2-man advantage Trimsaran laid siege to the home team’s try line and only great defence by the ever-impressive number 8 David Hefford and flanker Lee Arundel kept the scores unchanged till the final whistle.

A great result for the valley’s team who now face Haverfordwest, at home in the next round of the cup on December the 8th.
