Penarth V Tylorstown Match Report

Penarth 7 Tylorstown 27

Tylorstown resumed league fixtures with a well earned bonus point win, away to Penarth. In poor conditions not conducive to open running rugby both teams should be congratulated for trying to make the game more expansive. The away team, playing up a slight slope and against the elements in the first half, were first to put points onto the board. A well worked lineout on the Penarth 22 metre line, turned into a rolling mall which was stopped 5 meters from the home team’s try line, the ball was recycled quickly and fed to second row Mathew Paul who powered his way over in the corner, the conversion out wide being missed.

Tylorstown’s next try was the result of a combination of great forward play who worked the ball up to the half way line and slick handling by the backs, the ball was moved to outside half Chris Harris whose short pass to inside centre Jordan Williams bisected the home team defence, enabling Williams to score under the posts, the conversion was kicked by Harris making the score 0-12 to Tylorstown. Penarth then enjoyed their best period of the game encamping on the away team’s try line, only fantastic defence kept the home team from scoring their first points of the day. After several minutes of dogged defence, the valley side managed to turn the ball over and kicked the ball into touch whereupon the referee blew up for half time.

As the second half started the home team seemed to move up a gear and great work by the Penarth pack allowed their impressive number eight to go over, close to the posts for a converted try, bringing the score to 7-12 to Tylorstown. The away team’s third try was scored by industrious wing Keiron Richards, who managed to squeeze over in the corner for an unconverted try. Unfortunately, Richards was injured whilst scoring and although he heroically tried to play on he eventually had to leave the field due to his injury. A further penalty by Harris made the score line 7-20 giving Tylorstown a healthy lead. Sadly, centre Williams had to leave the field due injury which hopefully is not to serious, Williams is having a fantastic start to the season scoring 6 tries in 7 games and is always dangerous in attack and solid in defence. The final and bonus point try of the game was scored by livewire flanker Adam Phillips, with Harris converting. An excellent win for the valley side all the more impressive due to the fact that they were down to 14 men for 25 minutes because of 2 yellow cards and no substitutes left to use as a result of numerous injuries during the game. Although it was a great team effort, special mention must go to prop Aiden o’Donaghue for his immense efforts throughout the game.

Tylorstown return home for next weeks fixture against local rivals Penygraig.
