Tlorstown v Cefn Coed Match Report

Tylorstown – 13
Cefn Coed – 18
This was a thoroughly entertaining game between two well matched sides. Cefn Coed deserved the
win but Tylorstown baled well in front of the home crowd at Penrhys Park.
Cefn Coed remain unbeaten in the league with Tylorstown in fourth posi!on. This display by
Tylorstown should give con"dence to the players that they have the poten!al to be at the top at the
end of the season if they compete and perform like this in future games.
Tylorstown couldn’t have had a worse start. Within the "rst minute a missed tackle resulted in Cefn
Coed’s impressive Number 8 charge through the home defence close to the ruck on half way and o&
loaded to the wing who scored a converted try.
Tylorstown bounced back admirably. Outside half Michael Melhuish and scrum half Liam Morris
kicked well and gained good territory by making the Merthyr side turn. Their e&orts were backed up
by an excellent home line out with hooker Jamie Davies again "nding his jumpers con"dently. Second
rows Robert Hemming and Lukke Rees won a stream of line out ball at the front and middle of the
line outs with Number 8 Dai He&ord securing ball at the back.
Tylorstown’s "rst try was a result of clean line out ball which enabled captain Chris Lloyd to break
from the home 22 metre line and passed to He&ord who caught and passed in one movement to
Rees who was brought down on the away 10 metre line. The ball was kicked through by Morris and
the Cefn Coed winger fumbled the ball. Wing Ryan Ackerman showed great skill in picking up the ball
at pace and raced to the line.
This season Tylorstown have been completely dominant in the scrum but they were greatly tested by
the big Cefn Coed pack and honours were about even at the end of the game. The solid scrum gave
Morris !me to kick tac!cally which he did to great e&ect. One such kick was beau!fully placed and
Lloyd caught it and it looked as though a try was on for Tylorstown but a pass went awry.
Minutes later Tylorstown were penalised for holding on to the ball in a ruck and Cefn coed
successfully kicked the penalty. Unfazed Tylorstown launched an aack through strong running by
prop Ashley Thomas and Hemming which eventually led to a penalty kick for Melhuish.
In the second half many changes occurred in the pack and Tylorstown struggled to play as well as
they had in the "rst period and Cefn Coed’s backs had a great deal of possession. Stout tackling by
Melhuish and 7anker James Groves kept Cefn Coed at bay. Tylorstown transgressed again in the
contact area which resulted in another three points for the Merthyr side.
Full back Kieran Richards pulled o& the best tackle of the day when he bundled the Cefn Coed winger
into touch metres from the Tylorstown try line. The ball was eventually cleared from the line out and
Tylorstown inched their way bit by bit up to the Cefn Coed 22 metre line. Centre Sam Davies made
good ground and o& loaded to the impressive Rees who was brought down. Cefn Coed cleared their
lines but Tylorstown won the line out and the pack got behind He&ord and drove him over the line.
Tylorstown came close again to a push over try but the ball spilled forward. Tylorstown tackled well
for most of the game but Cefn Coed scored the deciding try as a result of poor tackling and
  • communica!on from the home side. Despite this lapse in concentra!on Tylorstown played with
purpose and will relish travelling away to Cefn Coed for the return "xture.
    Tylorstown Youth – 20
    Ystrad Youth – 10
Tylorstown bouced back from their recent defeat to Treorchy with a resounding win over close rivals
    Ystrad.
Try scorers for Tylorstown were 7ankers Jake John, Leon Jones and Jake Jones.
