Tylorstown v Caerau Ely Match Report

Tylorstown – 27

Caerau Ely – 7

Tylorstown resumed league action with an emphatic bonus point win over Caerau Ely at Penrhys Park. Prior to the game, Caerau were league leaders but they were resoundingly beaten by a well organised Tylorstown team.

Tylorstown were buoyed by the fact that many players returned from injury and unavailability to start this game and were determined to make their mark. The back row of captain Chris Lloyd, Number 8 Dai Hefford and flanker Nathan Davies were all in sparkling form with ball in hand and led the charge for the home side.

Caerau started well and Tylorstown initially struggled in the scrum, with the heavier Cardiff forwards disrupting Tylorstown’s set piece. With this advantage, the visitors scored a converted try in the corner and at this stage it looked as though the game would be a tight affair.

Tylorstown responded with a penalty from full back Chris Harris. Tylorstown knuckled down and showed good defensive skills. Wings Morgan Evans and Chris Griffiths, hooker Jamie Davies, prop Ashley Thomas, centres Kieran Richards and Sam Davies made strong tackles throughout. The outstanding Hefford stole a number of Caerau lines out and half backs Liam Morris and Michael Melhuish guided the forwards into good attacking positions.

Tylorstown’s first try was a result of individual skill by Hefford. He picked the ball up from the back of the scrum outside the away 22 metre line and startled the Caerau defence with his pace to touch down near the posts. Harris converted.

Tylorstown hit rucks hard and Caerau found it difficult to gain clean possession and could not break through the superb defensive line of Tylorstown. Second Row Tom Boyce linked well with hooker Davies at the line out and was also a threat with ball in hand.

Caerau could not contain Hefford, Nathan Davies or Chris Lloyd who all ran amok through the Caerau defence. Hefford touched down again following a line out close to the line on the stroke of half time.

Tylorstown were enforced to make changes in the second half but it did not disrupt the pattern of the game. Second Row Craig Miles showed up well and came very close to scoring with the try eventually being scored by the outstanding Nathan Davies. Melhuish converted.

Davies finished the last quarter as Tylorstown’s most influential player. Time and again he broke free and made the defensive line turn. His outstanding performance was rewarded with his second try which effectively ended the contest for Caerau Ely.

Next week Tylorstown travel to Rhondda neighbours Tonyrefail.
