Tylorstown V Llantwit Major Match Report

Tylorstown – 23

Llantwit Major – 23

Tylorstown can consider themselves fortunate to come out of this drawn game with two points. Despite a resounding victory last week, the home side looked a shadow of the side that dominated proceedings last week. However there were some positive passages of play from Tylorstown and good individual performances.

The main stumbling block was a lack of cohesion in the team, with many players injured causing a re-shuffle in positions. This was compounded when key players had to leave the field injured and the coaches had to use the bench throughout the game. Many individuals played well such as Number 8 Dai Hefford and flanker James Groves before he left the field injured but there was very little continuity between the forwards and backs.

Tylorstown went ahead with a penalty kick from outside half Michael Melhuish but went into arrears when the home side spilled the ball in a tackle and Llantwit capitalised running in a try under the posts which was converted.

Despite a number of big tackles by Groves, Tylorstown struggled to get into the game and found it difficult to win line out ball. Llantwit went further ahead with a penalty kick.

Tylorstown kicked to touch from a penalty into the Llantwit 22 metre line. The line outs prior to this were not a source of possession but this one was successfully won by the home side and the forwards executed a driving line out to send captain Chris Lloyd over for an unconverted try.

Many home supporters were willing this to be the catalyst for an improved performance. Instead the Llantwit Major centre broke through weak tackling enabling the wing to score under the posts.

Tylorstown kept themselves in the hunt with a very good try instigated by Melhuish. He showed good vision and kicked high cross field to Groves who stepped over the line to touch down which meant that Tylorstown went into the break four points behind.

Llantwit started the second half well with a penalty kick which was later cancelled out by a Melhuish penalty kick. Substitute Jamie Davies joined the fray and Tylorstown’s line out improved. However with a number of injuries in the forwards, they found it difficult to nullify the opposition eight who were able to slow ball down and make it difficult for the Tylorstown backs to get into the game.

With the game going Llantwit’s way, coach Dean Gauvain came on as flanker and made a massive impact in the last quarter. His forwards started hitting and clearing rucks with more purpose. He re-energised Tylorstown’s play and lead from the front.

In the last minute of the game, Tylorstown scored in the corner with Lloyd scoring his second. With the scores 21-23, Melhuish was faced with a difficult conversion out wide on the ride hand side of the field. With aplomb he slotted the pressure kick and secured a very unlikely draw for the Rhondda side.

Next week Tylorstown travel to near neighbours Wattstown in the Mid District Cup.
