Cardiff Saracens V Tylorstown Match Report

Cardiff Saracens – 7

Tylorstown – 31

Tylorstown start the new season as they finished off the last season with an away win in atrocious conditions. Tylorstown’s bonus point win was built on a dominant scrum and a sparkling performance from young centre Jordan Jones, fresh from the youth team, who scored a hat trick.

The Roath Park surface was very heavy and the wet conditions meant that the ball went to ground on many occasions. The referee clearly had empathy for the plight of the players and refereed the game sensibly to allow the game to flow.

The scrum was a source of good possession with the front row clearly on top from the first set piece. Three seasons ago the same players were being dominated by more experienced front row players. This is no longer the case and their perseverance is now reaping the rewards. Tight head Aiden O’Donaghue is now the corner stone of the Tylorstown scrum enabling others to prosper. Hooker Jordan Wills has developed his game to be both strong in the scrum and retain his natural flair with ball in hand. Last season’s youth captain, Jamie Davies entered the fray at hooker in the second half and was equally impressive. Ashley Thomas, a player who is willing to play anywhere, gave his tight head a torrid time all afternoon. Tylorstown were awarded a penalty try due to the fact that the Saracens continually dropped the scrum on their line. Number 8, Nathan Davies, capitalised on the platform provided by the tight five and capped a fine performance both in the loose and tight to cross for a try.

But the plaudits must go to the youngster Jordan Jones who scored a fine hat trick demonstrating his speed and strength to break clear. His centre partner Sam Davies provided good service and allowed Jones to create cutting angles by delaying his passes and putting him into space.

Coach Dean Gauvain was delighted with the win and pleased that no player threw carefree passes but played to the conditions and adhered to his game plan.

Next week Tylorstown entertain Llantwit Major at Penrhys Park.
